i still cannot believe that we are almost half way into 2011...

not only has this year allowed me to grow as an individual, it has also allowed me to reflect the connections i've developed within the community

the Toronto Craft Alert has been a part of my life since may 2008. My friend, introduced me to the website and I immediately freaked out. There was this whole craft world I wanted to learn more about. I went to events, shops, and started meeting incredible people. big love to the workroom/ladies for being my 2nd home, my escape, my haven whenever i needed it.

i don't know if this rapture business has affected my train of thought...but just wanted to take the time to thank my amazing fam and friends who have been there for me, who i have just met, and who i will continue to meet!

HELLO! to debbie

i first met this girl while taking my first ever quilting class at the workroom. we took the sampler quilt class, probably the 2nd time it was ever offered, back in november 2008. who would've known that within a few years, we started working together, went to school together, get inspired together, cried and laughed together, gone to warpaint together...trust me, the workroom ladies are full of creative, inspirational women...and we love to eat.

i am sooo honored to be the recipient of this amazing quilt debbie made in her last year at the crafts + design: textiles program at sheridan college. she naturally dyed it, hand stitched it...i just love it. (thank u thank u!!!)
i look at it every time i'm in my bed! the trade is in full effect, debbie!!! i'm working on my gift to you.

please watch out for this girl, you'll probably see her personal work at the next workroom trunk show!!!

HELLO! to JEN

before i met ever her, i would see jen's name everywhere - first time ever was in uppercase magazine issue 1 and jen 11, then through the toronto craft alert links...and then her illustrations became very familiar to me. i love that half sketch, half painting look. sooo good! I honestly don't remember how we initially met, probably through celine (?) but i am so lucky to know this talented lady. illustrations aside, jen and her husband kyle are two very sweet people. i hope to visit more of hamilton because of them.

jen sent this bunny guy via mail and it was such a surprise (i think it was one of my first personalized letters, NOT BILLS!) in my mailbox!!! i think he just ate a whole bunch of love. she knows how much i love bunny bums, thanks jen!

I first met jaime and a group of lovely ladies at a stitch n bitch nite at the workroom and was totally admiring their art journaling skills. hanging out with them allowed me to appreciate scraps of paper, stamps, tap dancing and letter sending (who doesn't love receiving letters in the mail?!).

send more mail was also just one of the newest vendors that came out for the city of craft/workroom's love + rummage sale a few weeks ago and i made a special request on house and boat stamps. i asked, and then i received! :D

this weekend has been filled with great company, food and mad love.
the week consisted of me getting ready for my dinner party...i was going crazy...

BUT on Saturday morning, I had a nice little brunch break in Hamilton with our lovely hosts - jen + kyle, with celine, jin, karyn, and andrew! karyn posted pretty pictures on her blog here + celine's blog here - everything was so beautiful and delicious...im still so happy that i have blueberry pancakes in my fridge. thanks jen + kyle for being such lovely hosts!!!

on Sunday evening i gathered some of my closest hommies to come hang out with me in my attic. shout outs to my family, jen + caitlyn. i am thinking of all of you and i was wishing you can be with me. that's ok tho..there will be other days! this hosting business was actually pretty fun! there maybe another one soooon! also, thanks to miss chris, who became my sous chef for part of the day and had input in my menu!

yesterday was the love & rummage sale held at the workroom and had such a great time! met lovely ppl, had conversations with ppl i haven't seen in awhile + i was happy to see all the love! i still ended up getting some loot even if i forgot my stupid wallet at home. thanks hommies!! i'll have to post images soon!

anyway....it's week 6 and the mini projects this week has a lot to do with my apartment. i fell in love with my apartment's lil' window niches and found the perfect thing to do with it....michelle hooked me up with one of etsy's bunting sheet...i got home and worked on it right away....i couldn't find my glue so I ended up sewing each bunting on string while watching the latest vampire diaries and vivienne westwood's london on ctv online.

so....week 4 was a total fail on my project

BUT....(on a happier note)...i did however got the opportunity to visit a pretty special lady, miss evelyn bouma - an eighty-six (ish) year old lady who creates and shares her knowledge about industrial sewing restoring and upholstery. orest and lois invited me for a tuesday morning drive to the mimico adult centre, where she teaches her upholstery, lampshade making and sewing classes. orest and i came in during one of her day classes and her upbeat attitude already got me so excited to learn more about the history of upholstering antique furniture! the studio walls were full of information, illustrations, and materials used to renew beautiful chairs and couches. I didn't take a lot of photos because i) i didn't get the chance to empty my camera memory and ii) i was caught up talking to her students - some ppl come from all over the world just to take her classes!

i'll have to make a piece for my apartment soon!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR friends! hows the first week of the new year treatin' u

i've been thinking a lot of all the possibilities i can do to challenge myself and also get back into my own practice. in case you didn't know, i did go to school...and i graduated with an art history and an art studio background - focusing mainly on 20th century theory/art and sculpture....ya.....i know rite, i haven't really done anything after i got my paper...so i thought ...things gotta change 'round heree!!

last year i created my own 365 project - drawing a day to practice drawing with different mediums (watercolour, collage, pen, india ink, etc)...and i failed at it - it was over on the 89th day.

this year i plan on doing a project a week and during that week, I'll be posting images of the processes.

WEEK ONE : I've been working on some necklaces that will (hopefully arrive on time) be part of the wunderkabinet exhibition in Berlin at the end of this month. I was asked by the lovely Leah of Coldsnap Bindery last year and finally sent out the package early this week. I hope she'll get it soon!!!!

it's tru...... you can take the girl out of the prairies, but you can't take the prairies out of the girl.

the biggest thing i miss about living in calgary besides my family...are the open skies, the close drive up to the rocky mountains, the wildlife you encounter, the trees...ahh everything! whenever someone mentions a road trip outta the city, i am always ready for it. i don't think i'll ever get sick of it, it changes every time i go. this time 'round, my sister and i went to canmore, alberta for lunch - we ate at bistro it was delicious!!!

i've also noticed that as i get older, the experience becomes more beautiful. trust, im taking it all in.

miss caitlyn mustard + i (we = cosmic latte) took the natural dyeing workshop at the workroom. julie, was our lovely instructor guided us through 3 sessions. I haven't been able to document of all the things we've done but here is my indigo tank top I made by using the pole wrapping technique. I love how certain parts look like feathers!

finally finished dress g from stylish dress book 1!

i really liked angelune's dark blue woodgrain version of it that i had to do it with this pink/grey/white fabric. i really love this fabric, i ended up buying so much of it (ahh!). the bias tape, pockets and buttons were made out of pink flowers with gold detailing! i really love gold + pink together.
well...gold anything ♥

one of the last concerts my sister and i went to before we left calgary was pocket dwellers held at this cute venue. we really had no expectations on what they were all about...but holy mother, they are absolutely amazing live. it would be so great to see them again! whoa.

a lot is happening today - last day of pride and redpath toronto waterfront festival at the harbourfront! (thanks for the suggestion geoff!!)

quilt #2's official unveiling! what!!!

ever since i took the sampler quilt class at the workroom in 2008, ive been wanting to make quilts for my family! i wanted to spend a lot of my time and love into making these quilts since i've missed out on a lot of birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries! :(

During the sampler class, I purchased the most perfect pink/purple floral japanese pattern with gold outlines and thought it was perfect for my parents' quilt. i also wanted to put in colours that represented each one of us - purple for my dad, pink for my mom, maroon/burgundy for my sister and yellow for me. i used the buzzsaw quilt pattern class to work on this quilt for a whole month and a bit! karyn took these photos!!!

For the label, i used variegated embroidery thread (shades of brown/grey/purple) on one of my favorite fabrics ever - the soft purple bali rain!!!

I was able to give this present to my parents when they came to visit me! think of me always hugging you!

in case you haven't noticed, i have a huge likeness towards boats. i don't know what it is....but i do remember getting excited over a boat ride when we were visiting BC a long long time ago. my dad drove it around while my mom, sister and i felt our hair in our faces. i am pretty sure i had a stupid jaw dropping smile on my face the whole time.

awhile back i was thinking of decorating the apt with mini boats, i found a boat pattern by ann wood and i tweeted about it. karyn came up with the idea of making it for the shop's windows! i was sooo excited. we wanted to create a story of a boat trying to reach its treasure. for a few months we had a fabric-mache boat and mini boats just sailing away . but just recently, they found their treasure!!!! yay. the shop windows are finally complete. more photos taken ! oh pretty diamonds.

ok, so last sunday, the workroom had it's yardsale trunk show, which had a line-up of amazing vendors and sweet yardage in the backyard.

i really like flowers and plants

i grew up having a garden in the backyard put together by my parents...i miss having that feeling of grabbing fresh vegetables in the yard and cutting pretty lilacs and tulips for the house...but since i don't have a yard to garden, i will settle with these lovelies!

i picked these pretty flowers from alison of coriander girl when celine and i went on a day-filled hangout!

two small words go a long way.

i just wanted to say thank you to all those who have been able to support this mini fundraiser...and to those who have already donated through other organizations! I was able to sell my first 5 brooches to some lovely friends. I was able to send my sister $80.00. It may not be much but i know they will be put it to good use.

We would like to announce that we have been fortunate enough to have our flights donated to us by WestJet & their Community Investment project for Haiti. Thank you so much WestJet!

This now means that all the funds raised will go towards supplies, medications, & donations towards the operation of ACTS World Relief & Operation Hope for Haiti's Children. We will give you a breakdown of where all donations go to once we get a chance to organize our inventory.

Formula, oral rehydration salts, vitamins, over the counter meds, diapers, bottles... our list goes on & is actually quite extensive. We are working hard to gather as much as we can this week before we go.

Thank you so much for all the well wishes, kind words, & encouragement. It means so much to us! We are incredibly eager to help those in Haiti & are honoured to be representing our amazing supporters!

as a lot of you know, there are some massive mother earth happenings around the world we may or may not know about - most recent - earthquakes in Haiti and now Chile!

To be honest, i read about these and feel horrible I can't do anything to help. Fortunately, one day, my sister called me up and told me that her and a couple of other pediatric nurses of the Alberta Children's hospital are wanting to help out big time. They are flying out to Haiti on March 9th and have decided to volunteer their time and skills to help the Haitian people.

From them:

"For two weeks in March, we have an opportunity to join a medical team that is being hosted by ACTS. ACTS is partnered with Operation Hope for Haiti's Children. They are now located across the street from the Hopitale Adventiste d'haiti now assisted by Loma Linda University Hospital in California. They are a registered NGO with the UN in Haiti. They have set up an ambulatory medical clinic that provide follow up care for all hospital patient needs as well as general popular medical care. They also have four mobile medical teams that are bused daily to remote areas with various supplies to provide care to over 50 area orphanages. Long-term projects include the renovation of the pediatric ward at the hospital, building of permanent medical clinic building, and assistance to build five schools and churches. They were in Haiti days after the earthquake and are committed to be in Haiti, supporting the people. Another recent project was assisting the Haitian Chief of Economics, Jean M. by bringing over a team of much needed engineers to assess the safety of many factory warehouses that offer job security for so many.

While in Haiti, we will be working with children in clinics and hospitals as pediatric nurses. We will be staying in a secure compound, but are required to bring our own camping gear. Essentially, we will be back country camping in Haiti....this will be an adventure, to say the least."

They are currently asking for support and in that, I have made some brooches. I am selling them for $15.00 CAD per brooch, and $10.00 CAD of it will be sent to them for funding - medical supplies and medication for their trip. I have them posted in a set on my flickr. I have made 5 so far, I will be making more this week. Since they are leaving on March 9th, I hope to send them what I get by Saturday March 6th.

= krazy drunk + sober people just decided to use this intersection to hug, scream and wave our flag proudly. it made me smile.

i normally love winter but for some reason, this winter was a little depressing and very slushie. i am sooooo ready for spring, come out soon. please.

it's 1:30am and i am wide awake.

it reminds me of a time when i had to stay up one night, in my 1st year university, and i ended up buying myself a caramel macchiato. i never had coffee before that so i asked for the sweetest thing on their menu...with chocolate shreds, raw sugar, whipped cream and ummm extra raw sugar - i was up for 2 days straight. anyways...i think this is what i get for sleeping for 2 days

i'm working on a new series for my drawing a day project....i've decided to draw objects from my desk by using different techniques.

i've also finished one of my projects today - my dress from the japanese stylish dress book! i finished my class at the workroom a few weeks ago but i had some adjustments to do. thanks to karyn who helped me through it and thanks to 440qe and its automatic button making machine, i was able to finish this without a problem. these are the results (shown above - real colour on flickr). i still have to finish the green dress - that's next on my list!!

this fawn marks the end of my baby animal studies for now (day 25-43 of my 365 project). it was really great to hear suggestions on what to draw! ((thank you!!!!)) i would probably do this again!!!! i can always use help whenever i get a drawing block.

i also think that love day should be everyday! i am a sucka for commercial holidays *ahem*valentines*ahem!!! ---- the heart shaped chocolate boxes, the special dates, the sweets to share, and all the red/pink/white hearts you can take, i am so down. i don't really know if i like getting anything but i do like giving people v'day stuff!

i am excited to have brunch with the mister tomorrow and spend the day adding buttons to my shirt and drawing! ps. happy family day too!

many things have happened lately...which is making me re-organize my life plans....again.

some parts have been tough to let go, but sometimes you have to take what you have and deal with it.

although, change is very hard on me, I think i've got so many things I want to do, now that i have the time to do it. i've been lucky to have supportive family + friends, having to work at an amazing shop, and being surrounded by creative and talented ppl. i am ready to work more, live more, and love more. i'm ready.

i'm also back on track with posting up my drawings for my 365 project. thank you for giving me some lovely suggestions for my baby animal studies, i will keep it updated per week!

ps. i worked this past sunday at the love + rummage sale at the workroom (presented by the city of craft + the workroom) and made small purchases + a trade. (sorry, no photos of the chocolate purchase by davis, as i gave it to andrew as a gift and it was immediately gone..ya, it was that delicious).

....oh ya, i am also been drooling over these

i've been cooped up at home today feeling like a wet noodle with kai at my side all day long. does anyone hear about this winter blues that comes around at the beginning of a new year? I never really understood it because i like winter/snow and i like the idea of a new year, new goals but this year i am kinda feeling it this year. weird.

anyway, on a HAPPIER note, i have been meaning to post this amazing package i received from my sister!!!! I felt so special picking this package up from shoppers drug mart and walking home with it in my arms. it was so pretty, i had to take my time opening it while andrew stared at me. my sister is pretty awesome and soo creative! pretty sweet huh? ya, she's pretty cool. thank you for everything!

kai was in on it too. he loves his new toy + chai went crazy over his new wooden carrot.

this was fun!!!!

i was on the queen west streetcar going home this evening...and it took me almost an hour to get to the subway because of certain circumstances - ttc signalling issues (which made us take a different route), a man banging on the closed streetcar door and yelling at the driver and crazy drivers honking at people getting off the streetcar! sup with that?! anyway, i was able to draw. in the first image, i had this idea of drawing lights because i saw them hanging somewhere this morning...but i got bored of it and started with my squiggles. i like them. i like them a lot.

i don't know if i'm able to blog every image i make....but particularly this one turned out really nice, i actually like it! they're of the japanese dresses I'm trying to make in karyn's dress book class at the workroom! I'm making the top one in class and the bottom one outside of class.

happy twenty-ten!

i've been a lil' m.i.a. these days enjoying some time away from school and actually visiting some family this weekend. Before that, i was still able to knit a scarf, sew some purses, began this pattern and begin my personal challenge for the year.

i've seen this 365 project everywhere these days (anabela, geoff, karyn, the 365 flickr pool). since I'm not very good at taking photos, i thought i should take this project and use this idea to draw instead. I wanted to take some time every day to practice my drawing and painting skills that have been pushed aside. I also wanted to keep time as my consistent measure...I'm allowing myself to draw 30mins min - 1.5 hours max. each day. i will also try to keep my flickr set as updated as i can.

i've also been looking at my list and to be honest, some of them almost seem impossible for me right now...so I will have to revise it within the next couple days.

anyway, i wish you all the best this year and i look forward to what this year will bring.

the holidays came out of no where that when classes finished we had noooo holiday decorations up or anything! so...the day i had my last critique, i went home and made some homemade fudge (brought to you by miss martha's recipe finder) my first time ever!!!! i made so much i had to share!

we also decorated our door from a paper cut puncher from mokuba. i love it.

anyway, i'm off to make more stuff for people. i apologize for late presents for my lovelies but i hope you like them!

so, this is my desk/area/workspace

Karyn recently tagged me to show my desk and during that time, my desk was in an absolute disaster! It was a couple weeks before city of craft and classes were getting too crazy. I guess it was the perfect time to shoot some images! these images were during a span of 2 weeks...i don't know how i typed on my computer...but I would have one elbow on a stack of books while the other one were on a stack of random paper or fabric. ya..pretty messy but it grew on me..oh oh! andrew and i also picked up a table from outside our building...i have used that as my felting table hahah great, a new place to stack my stuff!

it originally was the dining room table...but once I went back to school, it has become my main area..it's extended to the top of my filing cabinet, where my sewing machine temporarily rests to all the way to another square table.

cosmic latte's first debut happened last weekend at the city of craft!

it was really great to see familiar faces and work/faces i've seen online

caitlyn and i had such a great time with neighbours tanya (of snap+tumble) and eric (of at.aw orphans plush) and further neighbours kalpna (of old weston) and roisin (of bespoke uprising)!!!

to be honest, i was super nervous of the whole thing, i was just really happy to have caitlyn at my side and keepin' me sane.

thanks to all of our friends, family, and city of craft for the support and for those who have seen us for the first time - cosmic latte will be running again in the new year, so please look for us!!!
